About the Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy

At Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy,

Our main goal is for children to develop a love for God through our Christian-based educational program. Our staff is dedicated to providing a nurturing and caring teaching environment that combines academic skills in the core subjects with bible-based learning.


We understand that not all children learn the same, so various teaching materials will be used to address all learning styles. Our teachers also provide a learner-centered, well-organized classroom environment that encourages a proper work ethic, allowing for students to concentrate on their work and develop strong character traits.

Our History

Wheeler Avenue Infant School was founded in 1967 by Mrs. Audrey Lawson.

Mrs. Lawson was a frontrunner in education and wife of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church’s founder, Pastor Emeritus William A. Lawson.

In 2005, our current pastor, Rev. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby, shared his vision for a Christian school. Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy (WACA), was an outgrowth of the Wheeler Avenue Infant School, which was the first school in this area to provide services for babies at six weeks of age. 

It is our belief that Christian education is vital in developing children who will become productive citizens and influential leaders. A distinctive element of the learning community at Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy (WACA) is our acknowledgment of the pivotal connection between Christian education and academic skills. Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy is committed to providing high-quality education and high academic standards for its students. As we survey our best practices, it is our goal to use these procedures to accelerate students to their highest potential. The teachers at WACA are key components in creating quality educational experiences for children.

Our Leader

Melissa J. Hamilton

Director of Operations

Ms. Hamilton is a native Houstonian and has been a proud member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church for over 40 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Services Management, a Masters in Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction, and credentials for a Childcare Director’s license. Ms. Hamilton has always had a love and passion for nurturing children and began her work with the Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy (WACA) in 2012 in an administrative role. She now serves as the WACA Director of Operations, giving leadership to the infant school (ages 6 weeks - Pre-k4). In her personal time, Ms. Hamilton enjoys reading and spending time with family. She is the proud mother of two children.
