Our Mission & History

Our Mission Statement:

To create a lifelong commitment to God’s principles, for students to live, love, and learn, so that a legacy is left for all who follow.

History of Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy

Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church supports and encourages the development of children. Since its inception, in 1962, the church has embraced early childhood education. In 1967, along with Texas Southern University professor, Allee Mitchell and Prairie View educator, Mrs. Lillie Burns, Mrs. Audrey Lawson, a frontrunner in education and wife of Pastor Emeritus William A. Lawson, founded Wheeler Avenue Infant School. Following Wheeler Avenue’s decision to organize and operate an infant school, there have been notable successes. Alumni of the Infant School are making significant contributions to the city of Houston as educators, entrepreneurs, medical doctors and plethora of various careers.

On June 15, 2005, the current pastor, Rev. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby, shared his vision for a Christian school that would include kindergarten through grade 12. In preparation for this modification, the Infant School evolved into Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy.

It is our belief that Christian education is vital in developing children who will become productive citizens and influential leaders. A distinctive element of the learning community at Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy (WACA) is our acknowledgment of the pivotal connection between Christian education and academic skills. Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy is committed to providing high-quality education and high academic standards for its students. As we survey our best practices, it is our goal to use these procedures to accelerate students to their highest potential. The credentialed/certified teachers at WACA are key components in creating quality educational experiences for children.
